GIA introduces a testing system to distinguish between cultured and natural diamonds

GIA(Gemological Society of America) has introduced a fully automated testing system to distinguish between lab-grown and natural gemstones.

The system sorts selected diamonds by colour range, and customers can specify a size range for their packages, which are sorted and sealed in secure packaging for transport.

The screening technology is powerful, accurate and fully automated, said GIA chief laboratory and researcher Tom Moses. It can screen between 1,800 and 2,000 gems an hour and can sort stones by color. The system is suitable for round diamonds from 0.9 to 4.0 mm (approx. 0.005 to 0.25 carat) D to Z and must be cleaned before submission.
